What if I Get an Erection?

This is a question plenty of men have before their first nude event. You may understand that social nudity isn’t necessarily sexual and still wonder whether your penis got the memo.

It’s a normal thing to worry about. And an erection is a normal bodily response, including when it turns up at an inconvenient moment. There’s a straightforward way to handle it.

Does it happen?

It can. An erection doesn’t always mean you want sex, and being attracted to someone doesn’t mean you’re going to get one. Bodies aren’t that predictable. Erections come and go; you don’t have to treat one as an emergency.

The thought of a room full of naked men might seem exciting at home. Once you’re there, trying to remember someone’s name and finding somewhere to sit, it can feel surprisingly ordinary.

What should I do?

Keep it discreet. Cover yourself with your towel, or take a quiet break somewhere appropriate until it passes. Follow any guidance the organizer has given.

You don’t need to announce it, make a joke or offer the room an apology. Give yourself a moment. Trying desperately to make it disappear can leave you more tense and fixated on it, which is the opposite of the ease you’re after. You don’t need to keep checking whether it’s gone.

Bring a towel you can comfortably cover yourself with. Knowing you have that option can take some of the worry out of the whole thing.

Will people think I’m being sexual?

You can’t control what every person thinks. What you can control is how you behave.

An erection you’re discreetly managing is different from deliberately displaying it, touching yourself sexually or directing unwanted attention toward someone. Being naked together doesn’t make any of those things welcome. You haven’t done anything wrong simply because your body responded.

Groups vary in how they handle this. If you’re worried, ask the host privately before attending: “It’s my first time. What’s your etiquette if I get an erection?” A clear, matter-of-fact answer can take some of the pressure off.

What if I spend the whole time worrying?

Give yourself something else to do. An event with swimming, games or a shared activity may suit you better than standing around trying very hard to look relaxed.

You might still check yourself occasionally. When you notice you’re doing it, bring your attention back to whoever’s talking or whatever you’re doing. There’s no need to turn the afternoon into a test of how well you can control your penis.

And if it happens, handle it quietly and let it pass. It may feel embarrassing, but it doesn’t mean you’ve failed at nudism. You’re allowed to be a little awkward while you find your feet.
